Events in Capalbio: On 20 May, the patron Saint Bernardino is celebrated in Capalbio, a festival not to be missed

20 May is a special date for the picturesque town of Capalbio, located in the Maremma region of Tuscany. It is the day on which the community comes together to celebrate its patron Saint Bernardino.

Who was St Bernardino?

St Bernardine of Siena, born in 1380, was a Franciscan friar known for his religious fervour and dedication to charity. A tireless missionary, St Bernardine is remembered for his zeal in preaching and bringing comfort to people in need. His devotion and compassion made him a point of reference for many communities, including the one of Capalbio.

The feast of St Bernardino in Capalbio

The feast begins with a solemn mass at the church of San Nicola, with the participation of the local community and pilgrims from near and far. The religious celebration is a moment of reflection and gratitude for the spiritual legacy left by Saint Bernardino. After the mass, the streets of Capalbio come alive with a series of events and activities celebrating culture, tradition and hospitality. Attractions include folklore shows, music concerts and costume parades that take visitors back in time to discover the ancient traditions of the Maremma.

The 2024 programme

On Saturday, 18 May, there will be a widespread historical-photographic exhibition with more than 15 photographic enlargements in the streets of the village. The exhibition will continue inside Palazzo Collacchioni with the display of the banners of the Capalbio districts and unpublished photos from the F.lli Gori "le cacciate dell'ambasciatore" archive. The inauguration is scheduled for 11.30 a.m. with Giovanni Gori. Following this, around 12:30, there will be a cooking show with tartare tastings by meat chef Luca Terni.

On Sunday 19 May, a double concert by the Philharmonic Society of the City of Grosseto awaits us: around 25 elements will play at two times of the day, in addition to the parade through the alleys of the historic centre.

On Monday 20 May there will be fun with a treasure hunt for children at 14:30. This will be followed by a tasty snack offered by Macchiabuia. At 17:00 there will be a Mass followed by the Procession.

Definitely a weekend not to be missed between culture, food and wine, and music.
